You can have a full calendar, a phone that keeps ringing, and nights and weekends swallowed by work. Even then, one uncomfortable question remains. If you stopped working tomorrow, would your business actually keep growing? For many experienced agents, the honest answer is no.
A full plate can hide a demanding job. Take Susan. She was on track to do 24 units in a year, constantly working, and every new client meant more time away from her family. At some point she realized she hadn’t actually built a business. She’d built a very demanding job. It depended entirely on her showing up and grinding through every task herself, and that’s a trap a lot of talented agents fall into without ever noticing it happen.
Busy doesn’t always mean productive. Here’s the thing we come back to again and again: busy and productive aren’t the same. Answering phones, handling every administrative task, and chasing down every lead could keep you busy 25 hours a day. But that $30-an-hour work is the kind other people could do for you, and staying buried in it doesn’t make you productive. It just means you’re occupied.
Ask what you should stop doing. So at some point, an agent has to stop asking, “How much more can I fit in a day?” and start asking a very different question: “What should I no longer be doing?” That shift is where real growth starts. When you have the right agents around you, with the right models and systems, and eventually other agents working alongside you, you start building a business that’s actually growing instead of just staying busy.
The right team means doing your best work. Working with the right team isn’t just about you doing less. It’s about doing the things you’re really good at. A good team should free you up to spend more time with clients, generate more business, build on your strengths, and create new opportunities for growth. It’s how you build something bigger than an individual business where you’re just selling one more house.
So if you’re busy but feel like you’re not growing, maybe the answer isn’t to work harder. Maybe it’s building differently.
